"A Young Cowboy", graphite
In order to fully appreciate how much i've learned and grown over the years- i've got to look back to my first attempts. The above picture is actually my first EVER completed attempt at drawing a human being. Not too shabby on the supporting material but my facial features have a long way to go. It doesn't help that my brother's face is turned one way but his eyes are turned towards us. It was a good solid attempt- hey everyone's got to start somewhere! ;)
The bottom piece here was my first self portrait using prisma colored pencils. (The start of a life time joy of the medium) The project was to face a stand up mirror and draw ourselves. It taught us to look and "see" then look down and draw what we actually SAW, not what we think or want to see. It's a very basic, very critical eye training method we have to learn. Not bad considering i didn't recieve colorology instruction until my senior year in high school- color is very difficult to render. Considering i was going off what i thought or believed was correct- i managed fairly well. You can see the much improved rendering of the facial features- even though it doesn't look much like me- the eyes, nose, etc. is much closer to life than my other attempt.
